Women's Soccer Team Earns Victory At DePaul

CHICAGO, ILL. ? The Drake women's soccer team opened the road portion of its season on a winning note by scoring a goal in each half to knock off DePaul, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Wish Field.

The Bulldogs scored the winning goal in the 75th minute. Freshman Bailey Dorrington (Cedar Rapids/Xavier) found freshman Katie Anderson (Naperville, Ill./North) just outside the box and beat DePaul goalkeeper Britnni Lally at 74:25. Lally got a hand on the shot, but Anderson put just enough on it for the ball to cross the goal line.

"I'm very pleased with the result given all the factors involved," said Drake head coach Corbin Stone. "We played two overtime periods against Nebraska on Wednesday then traveled on Thursday. The conditions were hot and windy today. Despite being tired, our team fought through it and we found a way to win with heart and hard work."

Drake (1-1-1) got on the board first off a corner kick by senior Nikki Thaden (Clive/West Des Moines Valley).

Thaden served the ball towards the far post where junior teammate Katie Sauer (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadow) sent in a liner on the one-timer. DePaul defender Janina Locascio nearly knocked the ball out of the goal, but Sauer's shot squeezed just inside the right post at 11:37.

DePaul tied the score at 1-1 on a penalty kick by Jennifer Dyer on the 25th minute. Following a foul on Shannon Williams in the penalty box, Dyer converted the penalty shot at 24:55 for her first goal of the season.

DePaul (2-2-0) created opportunities in the final 15 minutes, but the Drake defense was there each time to defend the net. Drake's Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) totaled two saves.

The Bulldogs took 10 shots in the match, including eight in the first period, while DePaul finished with seven shots. Drake also had six corner kicks compared to just one by DePaul.

Senior Sinead Brown (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) led Drake with three shots on goal, while Sauer had two.

Stone has been pleased with his team's effort during a rugged nonconference stretch in which the Bulldogs are playing teams from power conferences like the Big 12 (Nebraska), Big East (DePaul) and Big Ten (Northwestern, Iowa) Conferences.

"We're holding our own against teams from strong conferences," said Stone. "And we're doing it with great heart, attitude and good soccer."

The Bulldogs will have a week off before traveling to Iowa next Friday and hosting Florida Sept. 16.

"We have a much deserved break." Stone added. "I'm pleased with the development of our team. While we haven't been scoring a lot of points we have created a lot of scoring chances. We need to continue to improve and make sure to stay healthy."
