DES MOINES, IOWA -- Junior Crystal Townley's (Colorado Springs, Colo.)
goal at the 10:55 minute mark powered the Drake women's soccer team to
a 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference victory past league leader Evansville
Friday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Townley beat Evansville goalkeeper Theresa Bagby off a feed from junior Blair Nelson (Southlake, Texas) to record the game's only goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded four saves as Drake handed Evansville its first league loss in four outings. The Purple Aces fell to 8-3-2 including a 3-1 MVC mark.
“Our pressure on the ball all over the field was tremendous and caused Evansville problems,” said Drake Head Coach Lindsey Horner.
“Our back four were very organized and tough to break down tonite,” continued Horner.
The Bulldogs, earning their season-high third straight victory, improved their overall record to 4-7-1 including a 2-1-0 MVC mark.
“ I think it is great that we earned a shutout that against Evansville which has proved they can score goals on anyone," said Horner.
Drake and Evansville had12 shots apiece. Junior Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and freshman Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) led Drake with three shots each.
Schroeder earned her second straight shutout, following a 1-0 double overtime victory against Western Illinois last Sunday.
Drake will continue its season-long six-game home stand, hosting Missouri State Sunday in a 1 p.m. match.
