DES MOINES, IOWA -- Junior
Elizabeth Woerle's (Coon Rapids, Minn.) goal four minutes into the first overtime powered the Drake women's soccer team to a 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference victory over Missouri State Sunday afternoon at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Woerle headed in a shot off a corner kick by freshman
Lauren Wiltshire (Littleton, Colo.), beating Missouri State goalie Jackie Jasper. The goal was Woerle's fifth of the season and Wiltshire recorded her second assist of the 2008 campaign.
Junior goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded two saves as Drake handed Missouri State its second league loss. The Bears fell to 8-5-1, including a 1-2 conference mark.
“After a hard Friday night game (1-0 victory over Evansville) we came out tired, but we were determined and found a way to overcome our heavy legs,” said Head Coach
Lindsey Horner.
The Bulldogs, earning their season-high fourth straight victory, improved their overall record to 5-7-1 including a 3-1-0 MVC mark. The last time Drake won four straight was the second half of the 2006 season.
“The bench players came in and gave us the minutes we needed from them, providing the team with a spark,” said Horner.
Drake and Missouri State were even with eight shots apiece.
Drake, which recorded six shots in the second half and two in overtime, was led by Woerle with four.
Schroeder earned her third straight shutout, following a 1-0 victory against Evansville Friday.
“We have some great momentum and are playing with confidence and are playing with a lot of passion,” stated
Horner.
Drake will continue its season-long six-game home stand, playing host to South Dakota Friday in a 7 p.m. match.
