DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake women's basketball team raced to an 8-0 lead and
never looked back en route to its fourth straight home victory with a
67-55 decision past Western Michigan Sunday.
Junior guard Jordann Plummer (St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) scored all of her
team-high 12 points in the first half as Drake shot 53.6 percent from the
floor.
"We were all on the same page today as far as what we needed to focus on
and get accomplished on the floor," said Drake head coach Amy
Stephens.
"I was really proud of our defense and the way we came out in the beginning
of the game."
Tiera Delahoussaye scored five points for Western Michigan during a late
9-0 run to reduce Drake's largest first-half lead of 15 (32-17) at the 3:15
mark to six with 12 seconds remaining.
Freshman Amber Wollschlager (Milbank, S.D./Milbank) hit the front end of a
one-and-one with two seconds left and senior guard Ashleigh Brady converted an
offensive rebound with one second remaining to give Drake a 35-26 halftime
lead.
"The last four minutes of halves seem to be our achilles heel and we need
to keep working on closing out each half," said Stephens.
"Amber and Ashleigh hit some big baskets at the end of the first-half for
us."
Senior guard Lauren Dybing (Bloomington, Minn./St. Croix
Lutheran) scored all 11 of her points in the second half, making five shots in a
row. Sophomore guard Kristin Turk (Des Moines, Iowa/Lincoln)
added 10 points for Drake along with five assists.
"Lauren reacted in the second half exactly the way you want to see your
senior leaders reacting," commented Stephens.
"After not playing terribly aggressive in the first half she made some
adjustments and really turned it around in the second half."
Turk scored Drake's first six points of the game on back-to-back three-point
baskets.
"We took advantage of what the defense gave us and our ball movement was
effective," said Plummer.
"It was important to get off to a good start and that inspired us to play
well. It was great to play at home and we fed off the crowd."
Western Michigan's Miami Giden, who was
averaging 14.7 points and 6.7 rebounds coming into the game, was held scoreless
and grabbed just three rebounds.
"We really wanted to work hard on rebounding today," said Stephens. We
did a great job on Giden, keeping her off the boards."
Drake outrebounded the Broncos, 38-35, while the Bulldog bench outscored Western Michigan, 28-15.
The Bulldogs improved to 6-3 entering their non-conference finale against Iowa this Saturday (Dec.
20).
