Women's Soccer Team Faces Stiff Competition In Exhibition Opener, Falls To Kansas

LAWRENCE, KAN. ? The Drake women's soccer team took on Big 12 soccer powerhouse Kansas in its opening exhibition match, falling to the Jayhawks 3-0, Saturday night.

“We used this game as a test to see where we are at and what we needed to work on,” said first year head coach Lindsey Horner. “After only four days of training during preseason, we knew this would be a learning experience and we learned more about what we need to continue to work on.”

Drake junior Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Bulldogs with two shots, one of which was on goal, playing 82 minutes for Drake.

Juniors Melissa Lewis (Edina, Minn.) and Karissa Brown (Encinitas, Calif.) and freshman Lauren Wiltshire (Littleton, Colo.) each recorded one of Drake's five total shots.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded one save in goal for Drake.

“Playing a team as quality as Kansas will help us to prepare for stiffer competition during the regular season,” said Horner. “As we continue to get into game form we need to continue to work on being disciplined on defense and creative and hard working in the attack.”

Kansas peppered Drake with 14 shots, 10 of which came in the second half.

Forward Emily Cressy led the Jayhawks with two goals and four total shots.

Drake completes its preseason exhibition schedule by hosting Minnesota State-Mankato at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
