Illinois State Rally Snaps Four-Game Winning Streak By Men's Basketball Team

NORMAL, ILL. --  Champ Oguchi scored the last five points of the game to cap a career-high 29-point outing that helped rally Illinois State to a 65-61 victory past Drake Wednesday night.

Drake, which had a four-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 13-5 overall, including a 4-2 league mark. Illinois State, which had a two-game losing streak halted, improved to 15-2 including a 4-2 MVC record.

The Bulldogs' matchup zone defense held Illinois State to a season-low 36.2 percent shooting from the floor.

But Illinois State controlled the glass, outrebounding Drake, 34-31, including a 14-7 advantage in offensive rebounding which resulted in 14 second-chance points compared to just two by Drake.

The game was quite a contrast from the last time the teams played on March 9 last year when Drake posted a convincing 79-49 triumph past the Redbirds for the widest margin of victory ever in the championship of the State Farm MVC Tournament.

This time around there were 13 lead changes.

After two free throws by junior guard Josh Young (Lawton, Okla.) gave Drake a 61-60 lead with one minute 28 seconds left, Oguchi drilled a three-point basket from the right wing with 1:06 left staking the Redbirds to a 63-61 advantage.

Junior point guard Craig Stanley (Plano, Texas)  then committed a turnover on Drake's next possession when he slipped penetrating the paint and lost control of the ball with 43 seconds left.

Oguchi retrieved the basketball and was fouled by Drake's Adam Templeton (Rapid City, S.D.). Oguchi sank both ends of a one and one free throw situation to push Illinois State's lead to 65-61 with 42 seconds left.

Drake then missed three-point shots by senior forward Jonathan Cox (Barrington, Ill.) and Templeton as well as a rebound jumper by Young in the waning seconds.

Young and Templeton led Drake with 12 points apiece, while Stanley added 10.

Cox grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while moving into the No. 10 spot on the Drake career rebounding charts with 680, passing WIlliam Celestine who grabbed 676 from 1991-94.

Three-point baskets from Templeton and senior forward Brent Heemskerk (Grand Rapids, Mich.) allowed Drake to jump to an 8-2 advantage.

But the Bulldogs were unable to take advantage of a cold shooting spelling by Illinois State to expand that margin. The Redbirds went six minutes without scoring after a basket by Dinma Odiakosa had tied the score at 2-2 with 18:13 remaining.

After a dunk by John Michael Hall (Moultrie, Ga.), off his own steal, gave Drake a 17-14 lead with 2:53 left, the Redbirds used a 9-2 run to close out the first half grabbing a 23-19 lead.  The Bulldogs committed three straight turnovers in the waning minutes.

Illinois State extended the lead to 38-28 following two free throws by Oguchi after a technical foul was assessed to the Drake bench.

Behind four three-point baskets, the Bulldogs caught fire going on a 20-10 run to knot the score at 48-48 following a three-point basket by sophomore reserve guard Josh Parker (Harvey, Ill.) with 8:46 left.

Consecutive baskets from Hall and Stanley powered Drake to a 52-51 edge.

Drake shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 44.9 percent.

Drake made nine three-point baskets, including two apiece from Cox, Parker, Templeton and Young.

Heemskerk moved into tie for No. 4 on school career rebounding charts at 64 with Ken Maxey (1994-96).

Young moved into No. 13 on school career scoring list at 1,127, surpassing Larry Haralson (1972-75), who scored 1,120.

Cox moved into No. 19 on the Drake career scoring list at 1,113 points, passing Dolph Pulliam (1966-69), who had 1,007).
