DES MOINES, IOWA --  Co-Missouri Valley Conference leader Northern Iowa continued its torrid shooting, while also taking advantage of nearly an 11-minute drough without a basket by Drake, en route to its sixth straight victory with an 81-59 decision past the Bulldogs Saturday.

The Panthers, who snapped a four-game losing streak to Drake, improved to 12-6 including a 6-1 league mark.

The Bulldogs, suffering their second straight loss, fell to 13-6 overall including a 4-3 conference record. It also snapped a 12-game winning streak Drake had owned against schools from Iowa dating back to 2006.

Sophomore guard Josh Parker (Harvey, Ill.) came off the bench to score a career-high 25 points for the Bulldogs, including 14 in the second half.

Drake senior forward Jonathan Cox (Barrington, lll.), the league's leading rebounder, recorded his 17th career double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

After Cox hit a three-point basket from the left wing with 19:13 left to give Drake a 3-2 lead, the Bulldogs missed six straight shots during the next 5 minutes 16 seconds before Parker broke the ice with a three-point basket with 13:57 left.

Northern Iowa took advantage, scoring 11 straight points to grab a 13-3 lead with Johnny Moran scoring six points in surge.

Owning a 17-8 lead, the Panthers went on a 16-4 run to push their lead to 33-12 forcing Drake to call its second time out with 8:06 left.

"We obviously started the game poorly on both ends," said Drake head coach Mark Phelps. "They started extremely hot and one thing led to another.

"The rate they were making field goals early was really shellshocking to us and it carried over offensively. We did things we didn't want to do. We weren't patient and rushed some shots.''

Drake missed 14 straight shots following a layup by Craig Stanley (Plano, Texas) with 1:18 left in the first half until Cox ended the dry spell with a layup with 10:21 left in the game.

The drought covered 10 minutes 55 seconds and by then Northern Iowa erected a 65-30 advantage.

Drake shot 40.8 percent from the floor, while Northern Iowa fired at a 51.7 percent clip.

Stanley enjoyed his fifth straight double-figure scoring game by adding 11 points.

Moran paced a balanced Northern Iowa attack with 20 points, surpassing his combined total of 12 from his previous two games. He tied a career high with six three-point baskets.

Northern Iowa finished the game tying a season high with 11 treys.

"They (Northern Iowa) had a good inside-out attack," Phelps added. "They've got a great mix going right now."

Drake will play at Missouri State Wednesday, before visiting Creighton next Saturday.
