Second-Half Run Propels Missouri State Past Drake, 65-44

SPRINGFIELD, MO.  - Missouri State went on a 13-2 run to open the second half, while taking advantage of ice cold shooting by Drake, to earn a 65-44 Missouri Valley Conference victory Wednesday night.

Drake suffered through an 8 minute 53 second drought without a basket which started with 3:35 left in the first half.

After a three-point basket by Adam Templeton pulled the Bulldogs within 21-19, Drake would miss its next six shots until a layup by Josh Young ended the dry spell with 14:41 left in the second half.

By then the Bears had constructed a 38-25 lead.

Drake shot just 31.3 percent from the floor, making just 15 of 48 shots.

Young led Drake with 13 points, while Templeton added nine points.

Senior forward Jonathan Cox became just the fourth player in Drake history to collect 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in his career.

Cox, the leading rebounder in the MVC,  grabbed 13 rebounds while moving from No. 10 to No. 7 on the school career rebounding chart with 703 boards.

Cox missed his first 10 shots from the floor before finally making his first basket on a rebound with 9:08 left in the game.

Drake head coach Mark Phelps changed the starting lineup for just the second time this season inserting senior forward  Alex White and sophomore guard Josh Parker replacing Templeton and senior forward Brent Heemkserk.

Parker, who was coming off a career-high 25 points against Northern Iowa Saturday, had nine points for Drake along with three steals.

Senior Chris Cooks led Missouri State with 18 points, while Wade Knapp added 13.

Knapp (11) and Cooks (seven) combined to score the Bears' first 18 points of the game. Knapp scored seven straight points in less than a two minute span to give Missouri State its biggest lead of the first half at 13-6 with 12:41 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs, who suffered their third straight loss, fell to 13-7, including 4-4 in the MVC, entering a Saturday game at Creighton.
