Iowa Snaps Drake's Three-Game WInning Streak

IOWA  CITY, IOWA -- Drake held Iowa without a basket for nearly the last four minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 71-67 setback Saturday night.

After a layup by Jarryd Cole gave Iowa a 64-57 lead with 3:53 left, the Bulldogs held the Hawkeyes without a basket.

Iowa managed to hang on to the lead by scoring its last seven points at the free throw line.

Freshman center Seth VanDeest (Bettendorf, Iowa) kept came up big for Drake down the stretch by scoring six of the team's last eight points.

VanDeest led Drake with 15 points, including 12 in the second half. He is now shooting 73.6 percent (14-18) from the floor in his last two games, while averaging 18.0 points.

Drake owned a pair of seven-point leads in the first half but went into the lockerroom with a 32-31 halftime lead. The Bulldogs shot 52.9 percent from three-point range in the first half, making nine of 17 shots.

Iowa answered with a 12-4 run to open the second half, turning a one-point deficit into a 43-36 lead.

"We didn't end up playing as well on our offensive end as we have been playing the past few games, and that ended up being our undoing," Drake coach Mark Phelps said. "Their defense had a lot to do with it."

A three-point play by VanDeest pulled the Bulldogs within 64-62 with 2:15 remaining.

Two free throws by Iowa's Eric May pushed the lead to 66-62 before VanDeest answered with turn-around basket to cut the deficit back to two points with 1:15 left.

Drake's Adam Templeton (Rapid City, S.D.) fouled May on Iowa's next possession but the freshman made only one of two free throws to give the Hawkeyes a 67-64 edge with 46.6 seconds left.

VanDeest was then fouled by Iowa's Aaron Fuller with 36.3 seconds remaining. He made one of two free throws to pull Drake within 67-65. Two free throws by May made it a two possession game, giving Iowa a 69-65 advantage with 28.2 seconds.

Drake's Craig Stanley (Plano, Texas)  made two free throws with 19 seconds to give the Bulldogs one more opportunity. The Hawkeyes nearly coughed up the ball in transition before Mike Gatens grabbed it and went to the line with 12.6 seconds left. He hit both free throws to make it 71-67. Josh Young's (Lawton, Okla.) lone three-point shot bounced off the rim.

Young had 13 points for Drake, while Stanley and junior guard Ryan Wedel (Minneapolis, Kan.) had 11 points apiece.

Wedel had a career-high six rebounds to lead Drake. His 11 points more than tripled his output of three points in previous outing vs. Binghamton

A layup by  Stanley gave Drake an 11-10 lead it never relinquished in the first half.

Back-to-back three-point baskets from Wedel and Young gave Drake its biggest lead of the half at 20-13 with 8:53 left. Wedel had three three-point baskets in first half to lead Drake with nine points, tripling his output of three in previous game last Saturday against Binghamton.
