DES MOINES IOWA -- Forward Mark Yelovich scored six points in the last 1 minute 10 seconds helping SIU Edwardsville rally to beat host Drake, 60-58, in the opening round of the second annual Drake Hy-Vee Classic Friday night at the Drake Knapp Center.
The Cougars will meet Texas-Arlington in the championship. The Mavericks toppled North Dakota, 75-65, in Friday's first game.
After a layup by freshman
Seth VanDeest (Bettendorf, Iowa) gave Drake a 58-52 lead with 2:33 left, the Bulldogs closed out the game missing their last four shots.
Drake had earlier gone 7 minutes 11 seconds without making a basket midway through the second half (13:51 to 6:40), but still managed to maintain a lead.
VanDeest led Drake with a career-high 15 points, while junior guard
Ryan Wedel (Minneapolis, Kan.) added 10 points.
Drake shot 39.3 percent from the field, making just 24 of 61 shots.
Drake, which entered the game ranked fifth in the NCAA in three-point baskets (9.5 avg.), made a season-low four three-point baskets while hitting a season-low 21.1 percent beyond the three-point arc.
Wedel and freshman forward
Ben Simons (Cadillac, Mich.), the team's top two three-point shooters, were a combined 0-for-10 beyond the three-point arc with each missing five shots.
The Bulldogs also struggled at the free-throw line hitting just 6 of 11 shots, while missing the front end of four one-and-one bonus free throw situations.
Yelovich had a rebound basket and then hit a three-point jumper to pull the Cougars within 58-57. Drake forward
Bill Eaddy (Ypsilanti, Mich.) then threw an errant pass intended for Wedel on Drake's next possession.
SIU Edwardsville capitalized with Aamir McCleary hitting a layup to give the Cougars their first lead of the second half at 59-58 with 24.4 seconds remaining.
Drake's
Craig Stanley drove the middle of the paint but missed a layup with 10.5 seconds left. Drake's
Josh Young (Lawton, Okla.) committed a foul on the rebound with Yelovich sinking a free throw to account for the final margin.
Drake had a chance to tie the game but Wedel's jumper from the right wing with 2.1 seconds came up short.
Drake senior forward
Adam Templeton (Rapid City, S.D.) matched a career high with 10 rebounds.
Yelovich finished with a game-high 24 points for SIU Edwardsville which improved to 1-6. Drake fell to 2-5.
