DES MOINES, IOWA – A late
first-half goal proved to be all the scoring Kansas needed as the Jayhawks
spoiled the 2009 home debut of the Drake women's soccer team registering a 2-0
victory on Sunday (Aug. 23) at Drake Stadium.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-1 on the campaign, while Kansas
pushed its ledger to 1-0 overall.
“I thought we had some good opportunities but we weren't able to get
them on frame,” Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. “With our
defensive alignment today we struggled to get the ball forward to get more
looks on goal.”
The Jayhawks cracked the scoring column in the 41st minute (40:48) when
Erin Ellefson took a feed from Lauren Jackson and took a spinning shot which
beat Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) to the short side of the goal for a 1-0
advantage.
Kansas added another tally at the 57:01 mark when Whitney Berry connected
on a sliding shot that barely crossed the goal line to the lower left corner to
put the Jayhawks up 2-0. Shannon
McCabe earned the assist on Berry's goal.
Drake was bettered 17-6 in shots, with Berry and senior Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs,
Colo./Palmer) sharing top-game honors with five shots apiece. Senior Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek) registered the
Bulldogs' other shot in the affair.
Drake's best scoring opportunity came off the foot of Woerle at the
60:58 mark in the second half, as she fired a laser from the top of the box
which peppered Kat Liebetrau, who managed to hold on for the save.
Arnold finished the game with a five saves, while Liebetrau pulled in
one for the Jayhawks.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday (Aug. 28) when Drake tangles
with Colorado College at the Colorado College Fairfield Inn Invitational in
Colorado Spring, Colo. Game time
is slated for 5:00 p.m.
