VERMILLION, S.D. - Senior
Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek)
ignited the wick on Drake's offense explosion on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13) as
her two goals propelled the Bulldogs to a 3-0 victory over South Dakota.
Drake improved to 2-3-2 with the victory, while pushing
South Dakota's record to 2-3-0 overall.
"This was a hard place to play, with the long grass and
small field," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "We tried our best to make South Dakota
defend the whole width, which helped us in the attack, their offsides trap
caused us problems but we did get in behind several times and had numerous
chances to score. We'll continue to work on converting these opportunities into
goals."
The Bulldogs entered the game facing a Coyote squad that was
playing their first game in a week, while Drake had its second contest in as
many days after facing South Dakota State on Friday (Sept. 11).
Woerle placed Drake on the scoreboard first at the 14:07
mark posting her second goal of the season off an assist from senior
Karissa Brown (Encinitas,
Calif./La Costa Canyon).
Freshman Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt)
extended the margin to 2-0 on the strength of her team-leading third goal of
the season in the 31st minute (30:41).
Credited with assists on the tally was sophomore Lauren Berner (Omaha, Neb./Westside) and freshman
Kelsey Pigg
(Waukee, Iowa/Waukee).
Woerle netted her second goal of the game at the 63:41 mark
beating Jennifer Ogren to give Drake its final 3-0 advantage. Redshirt
sophomore Ali Walsh (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) and Moklestad were awarded assists
on the score.
Drake outshot South Dakota on the afternoon, 23-10,
including seven and six shots, respectively from Woerle and senior Crystal Townley (Colorado
Springs, Colo./Palmer). Katie Quinones led the Coyotes with two shots.
"We come home from this road trip with a to-do list of items
to clean up prior to the start of conference play," Horner said. "Anytime you can earn a shutout on the
road, it is a positive result."
Sophomore Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) pulled in a
team-high five saves for Drake en route to her second shutout of the season,
while Ogren made eight saves for South Dakota.
The Bulldogs close out their three-match road swing on
Thursday (Sept. 17) as Drake faces Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. Game time against the Westerwinds is
slated for 4:00 p.m.
