DES MOINES, IOWA - The Drake
women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort in its in-state battle with Iowa
on Wednesday evening (Sept. 30) before Jackie Kaeding's goal in the 71st minute
(70:41) broke open a scoreless affair to lift the Hawkeyes to a 1-0 victory
over the Bulldogs.
Kaeding took a pass mid-air from Alyscha Mottershead and placed the ball
into the upper-right corner of the goal to score what proved to be the
game-winner in moving Iowa to 8-3 on the year. The loss dropped Drake to 4-5-3 overall.
"I felt for the first time we were able to put together 90 minutes of
intense, organized soccer," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented.
"I think we were able to create quality chances against a very good Big
Ten opponent tonight."
The two sides played a extremely physical and intense contest in the
initial 45 minutes, but neither side was able to find the back of the net as
the tilt was scoreless at halftime.
On the strength of a 9-5 second-half advantage in shots, the Hawkeyes
outshot Drake in the affair, 14-8, but the Bulldogs had scoring opportunities
as fours of their shots were on goal.
Registering two shots apiece for Drake were seniors Elizabeth Woerle (Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek) and Crystal Townley (Colorado Springs,
Colo./Palmer) along with freshman Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt).
Iowa was directed by a four-shot performance from Mottershead, while
Alyssa Cosnek added three shots.
Sophomore Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk,
Iowa/Norwalk) recorded three saves for the Bulldogs, while Emily Moran stopped
four shots for Iowa.
"We wanted to use this game as a final chance to prepare for our MVC
season and I think we have a lot of positives we can take away from this game,"
Horner said.
Drake returns to the field on Sunday (Oct. 4) as the Bulldogs entertain
North Dakota in Drake Stadium, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
