DES MOINES, IOWA - On the
strength of the first career shutout for sophomore goalkeeper
Kourtney Arnold (Norwalk,
Iowa/Norwalk), the Drake women's soccer team battled No. 20 DePaul to a 0-0 double-overtime
draw on Sunday (Sept. 6) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
The Bulldogs earned a result over a ranked opponent for the first time
since playing No. 14 Marquette to a scoreless tie on Sept. 1, 2006.
Drake moved to 1-2-2 on the campaign with the draw, while DePaul saw its
ledger adjust to 3-1-2 overall.
"This is a great result for us," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented.
"We were able to put DePaul under pressure and when we kept the ball we
looked dangerous in the attack."
Both sides had their opportunities in regulation to crack the scoring
column but each goalkeeper came up with clutch saves. The Blue Demons outshot Drake in the first 90 minutes, 15-9,
before the Bulldogs garnered the advantage in overtime, 5-2, including 4-0 in
the second bonus session.
Nearly stealing the victory in the final seconds of the second overtime
period was Drake as the Bulldogs pushed the ball into the DePaul box only to be
stymied on sophomore Lauren Berner's
(Omaha, Neb./Westside) attempt at a game-winner.
Arnold pulled in a game-high seven saves in the Bulldogs' first shutout
of the season, while her counterpart for the Blue Demons, Claire Hanold,
recorded five stops. The shutout
was the first for Drake since posting a 3-0 victory over Indiana State on Oct.
26, 2008 and the initial home blanking of an opponent since a 9-0 triumph
against North Dakota on Oct. 19, 2008.
"I'm very pleased to have earned a shutout against a team of this
athletic caliber," Horner said.
Seniors Crystal Townley
(Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) and Blair Nelson (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) directed Drake with a team-high four
shots apiece. Morgan Celaya came
off the bench to spark DePaul with a game-best five shots.
The Bulldogs face road tests at South Dakota State and South Dakota on
Sept. 11 and 13, respectively.
Game time against the Jackrabbits is slated for 6:00 p.m., while the showdown
with the Coyotes kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
