DES MOINES, IOWA - On the strength of five singles victories,
the Drake men's tennis snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-1 decision
over DePaul on Saturday (Feb. 27) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
"We have been working on improving
our doubles play and it paid off today," Bulldog head coach Jimmy Borendame commented. "I was very pleased up and down with
everyone's effort. Our hard work
in the weight room is making us tougher and fitter in the third set and the
results are showing."
Drake easily netted the doubles
point sweeping all three contests with Guilherme Marsiglia (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and sophomore Jonathan Hadash (Lapid, Israel) clinching the deciding tally with
an 8-4 victory against Vanja Grgec and Mathias Hambach at the No. 2 position.
Registering the initial two wins
in singles play for the Bulldogs were Hadash and Marsiglia with triumphs on the
Nos. 5 and 3 courts, respectively, to provide Drake a 3-0 lead.
Freshman James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland) sealed the deciding point in the
affair recording a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 decision against Bartosz Jozwiak at No. 2.
Additionally, the Bulldogs
received wins from sophomore Cesar Bracho (Luque, Paraguay) and Mauricio Ballivian (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) at the first and fourth singles positions.
Drake faces two opponents on
Sunday (Feb. 28) as the Bulldogs tangle with Western Illinois and Chicago State
at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively.
