Bulldogs Open Valley Play With 6-1 Victory Over Creighton

DES MOINES, IOWA - A 6-1 home triumph over Creighton marked the 23rd consecutive regular season Missouri Valley Conference victory for the Drake men's tennis team in the Bulldogs' league opener on Thursday (April 1) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

"We won, but I am disappointed with our doubles play today," Drake head coach Jimmy Borendame commented.  "We did not come out with energy and did not have the "killer instinct".  I'm anxious to see who is going to step up on Saturday versus Wichita State."

Playing the inaugural dual match on its pristine outdoor courts, Drake grabbed the momentum in the affair by securing the doubles point with wins on the Nos. 2 and 3 courts.  Senior Guilherme Marsiglia (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and sophomore Jonathan Hadash (Lapid, Israel) sealed the tally with their 8-4 decision over Connor Macey and Kyle Obermeier at No. 2.

Hadash quickly extended the lead to 2-0 in singles besting Sean Mathison at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.

Posting his 22nd win of the year was freshman James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland), who gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage after downing Gabe Nagy at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia) secured the win in the tilt on the strength of a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Obermeier at the No. 4 singles hole.

The Bulldogs also garnered triumphs courtesy of junior Mauricio Ballivian (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and sophomore Cesar Bracho (Luque, Paraguay) on the Nos. 1 and 5 courts, respectively.

Drake returns to action on Saturday (April 3) as the Bulldogs host Wichita State at 12:00 p.m. at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
