The Drake University softball team dropped a 10-inning Missouri Valley
Conference thriller to UNI, Sunday, falling 1-0 in a pitcher's duel.
Junior Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) tossed
eight
shutout innings and left with the score tied at zero after eight. Junior
Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) entered in the ninth and threw the final
1.2
innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks to earn the loss.
Her
record stands at 12-6 on the season.
Dordel's eight scoreless innings dropped her
conference-best
earned run average to 1.00
UNI threatened in the eighth, but an outfield
assist by
centerfielder Macie Silliman (Winterset, Iowa) held the Panthers
in-check.
Silliman gunned down Megan Machovec at the plate from centerfield to
extend the
game another two innings.
Machovec eventually scored the game-winning run
in the
10th inning.
Silliman finished 2-for-2 at the plate,
accounting for
half of Drake's hit total. Seniors Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa) and
Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa) had one hit apiece.
The loss dropped Drake to 24-11 overall and 5-4
in the
Valley.
Drake hosts Missouri State in a three-game MVC
series
starting Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.
