ANKENY, IOWA - In a
promising start to its 2010 campaign, the Drake women's soccer team fought its
way to earn a 0-0 double-overtime tie in the Bulldogs' season opener with Iowa
State on Friday (Aug. 20) at the Prairie Ridge Soccer Complex.
The draw marked the second consecutive meeting between the two schools
to end in a scoreless tie after the teams waged a 0-0 battle last season at
Drake Stadium. Both Drake and Iowa
State now stand at 0-0-1 on the campaign.
"I thought this was a great start to our season," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "Our young kids stepped up and really
played well and our older returning players moved into new roles and did a
great job for us on the field. I'm
excited to build from here and looking forward to our season."
The contest wasn't without scoring opportunities as the Cyclones recorded
a 27-16 advantage in shots, including 10-6 on net.
Iowa State had several prime scoring chances in the encounter with several
attempts rattling off the goalpost and cross bar but ultimately were unable to
capitalize on its opportunities.
Drake's best scoring threat came at the 99:42 mark of the first overtime
period when junior Lauren Berner
(Omaha, Neb./Westside) took a pass inside the box and fired a shot which went
just to the left of Cyclone goalkeeper Ashley Costanzo.
In the second overtime, sophomore Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) nearly knocked in the golden goal
for Drake in the 106th minute (105:44) but Costanzo made a strong stop to
record the final of her six saves.
Moklestad paced the Bulldogs with a team-high four shots, while Berner,
junior Lindsey Johnston (Lincoln,
Neb./Southeast) and freshman Brittany Schuling (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrer) registered three, two and two
shots, respectively.
Freshman Kalena Litch
(Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) crafted a fine performance in net pulling in 10 stops
in her collegiate debut.
The Bulldogs return to the field on Sunday (Aug. 22) with a 1:00 p.m.
showdown at Green Bay.
