CSU Bakersfield Spoils Senior Day Downing Drake, 2-1

OCTOBER 9, 2011

DES MOINES, Iowa - There was no fairytale ending for Drake's six seniors as Sam Pena's second goal of the afternoon in the 84th minute (83:46) spoiled Senior Day for the Bulldogs (3-7-4) as CSU Bakersfield (3-9-1) registered a 2-1 women's soccer victory on Sunday (Oct. 9) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

In its last regular season weekend home game, Drake honored its six seniors Lauren Berner (Omaha, Neb./Westside), Angela Chigazola (Santa Rosa, Calif./Maria Carilllo), Melanie Fielder (Burbank, Calif./Burbank), Danielle Figliola (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek), Lindsey Johnston (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) and Amanda Wallace (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) in a pre-game ceremony.

"Today we looked like we were young in the back at times and they punished us for it," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented.  "Bakersfield made good on two of their three chances when they got in behind our backs, but we only capitalized on one of our several opportunities."

"When we were able to get in behind or around them out on the flank and it amounted to nothing, Bakersfield gained confidence.  It's unfortunate we couldn't have gotten a result for our seniors on their day."

Winless in their last seven games entering the day, the Roadrunners parlayed a 16-14 advantage in shots, including 11-6 in the second half, into the victory.

Pena got Bakersfield on the board first at the 11:22 mark when she got 1v1 with Drake sophomore goalkeeper Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) on a breakaway and beat her to provide the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.  Emily Noethe earned the assist on the tally.

The Bulldogs scored in nearly similar fashion as sophomore Paige Dusek (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) beat goalkeeper Kym Gause 1v1 in the 19th minute (18:26) to square the affair at one.  Fueling the goal were assists from Berner and Chigazola.

The contest remained deadlocked at one until Pena's heroics in the 84th minute.

Kassi Massey led all players with a game-high six shots for Bakersfield, while the Bulldogs were directed by three-shot performances from Chigazola and Dusek.

Gause pulled in a game-best eight saves for the Roadrunners, while Litch with her two saves equaled Jenny Schroeder (2008) for the third-most saves in a single-season with 95.

Drake closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Texas A&M, who is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, on Friday (Oct. 14).
