DES MOINES, Iowa -
The Drake University women's basketball team, down five to Quincy with 5:50 to
go, looked to Rachael Hackbarth for a spark. The senior didn't disappoint.
Hackbarth (Colgate, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored 14
points in an 18-9 Bulldog run that closed the game and powered the Bulldogs to
a 71-67 exhibition victory over the Lady Hawks Sunday at the Knapp Center.
"We ran sets to get the ball in her hands," said head coach
Amy Stephens. "Down the stretch, she had key rebounds, she made shots and she
did what we expect a senior with her experience to do. I'm proud of her
resiliency."
Hackbarth finished the game with 29 points and 16 rebounds,
both game highs. The senior helped Drake post a 42-20 advantage in points in
the paint over Quincy.
"We have to keep working, keep improving," Stephens said.
"Our team needed a game like that."
Quincy had the Bulldogs on the ropes early in the second
half. The Lady Hawks left the locker room down 29-22, but opened the first six
minutes of the half with a 15-8 run that tied the contest at 37 with 14:05 remaining.
The teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes until Quincy made good on
back-to-back three-pointers for a quick 6-0 run and a 58-53 lead with just
under six minutes left in the game. Senior Ali Schwagmeyer led the Lady Hawks
with 21 points and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the line.
"She led their league in scoring last year," Stephens said.
"She was Player of Year. We knew she was a big piece of their attack."
Juniors Kayla Person (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) and
Brittnye McSparron (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) score nine points apiece to
follow Hackbarth on the stat sheet. Sophomore Morgan Reid (North Kansas City,
Mo./North) pulled down six boards to help the Bulldogs tally a 45-38 lead in
the rebounds column.
Drake opens its regular season at Illinois-Chicago Saturday
afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
