MADISON, Wis. - Freshman Kyndal Clark scored a
career-high 17 points and made 4-of-5 from three-point range to help the Drake
University women's basketball team topple Wisconsin, 65-54, Sunday afternoon in
Madison. The win, Drake's third-straight and first over the Badgers since 2003,
moved the Bulldogs to 4-4 on the season.
Clark (Webb City, Mo./Webb City) connected on her first
three three-pointers to power Drake to a 30-21 halftime advantage.
"What a great game for Kyndal Clark," said head coach Amy Stephens. "She made some big shots for us. I'm proud of her."
The Badgers employed a full-court press to outscore Drake
24-14 over the first 13 minutes of the second half and take a 45-44 lead at the
seven minute mark. The Bulldogs answered with a 14-3 run to build their lead
back to 10 points, 58-48, with 2:30 remaining in the game. Drake ended the game
on a 6-2 run behind four points from Brittnye McSparron (Apple Valley,
Minn./Eastview).
"I was impressed at our composure tonight," Stephens
said. "Every time we got down, we came right back and answered."
Senior Rachael Hackbarth (Colgate, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) led all scorers with 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. For Hackbarth,
it was her third-straight 20-plus-point showing and fifth double-double of the
season. The senior finished 8-of-11 from the line, including 6-for-6 after
Wisconsin took the lead at the seven-minute mark.
Hackbarth's effort moved her season averages to 18.8
points and 10.1 rebounds per game - both Missouri Valley Conference highs.
"Rachael [Hackbarth] actually had a pretty quiet 20
points, if that's possible," Stephens said. "She made them when they counted."
Sophomore Morgan Reid (North Kansas City, Mo./North
Kansas City) scored two points and pulled down one rebound, but held the Big
Ten Conference's sixth-leading scorer, Taylor Wurtz, to just 12 points on 4-of-14
shooting. Wurtz tallied just two points in the opening half.
"Defensively, I'm really pleased at our effort, Stephens
said. "We guarded today."
McSparron totaled seven points and added seven rebounds -
her third-straight seven-rebound total. Junior Stephanie Running (Oak Creek,
Wis./Oak Creek) scored eight points and pulled down seven boards in front of a
sizable hometown crowd.
Drake travels to St. Louis for a 2:05 p.m. matchup next
Sunday.
