TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Drake saw its season-best three-game winning streak halted on Saturday (Feb. 12), as the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize
of their opportunities in a 75-63 setback at Indiana State.
The loss dropped Drake's ledger to 11-15 on the year,
including 6-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores swept the season series from the Bulldogs and
extended their record to 14-12 and 9-6 in league play.
Indiana State was able to get the ball inside on Drake as
the Sycamores registered a 34-12 point differential in the paint en route to
outshooting the Bulldogs, 48.1 percent to 37.3 percent.
Drake wasn't void of opportunity to capitalize in the affair,
but prolonged field goal droughts in each half ultimately had its effect on the
outcome.
The Bulldogs jumped out of the gates scoring six of the
game's eight points to assume a 6-2 lead after a jumper by freshman Rayvonte Rice (Champaign,
Ill./Centennial) with 16:23 left in the half.
Drake's offense went cold over the next 5:17 missing seven
consecutive shots and Indiana State took advantage going on an 8-2 run to
assume a 10-7 lead before a three pointer by sophomore Ben Simons (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) squared
the affair at 10 at the 11:06 mark.
Each offense picked up over the final 10 minutes of the
stanza as neither side extended the margin to more than four points before a
three pointer at the halftime buzzer by Jake Odum gave the Sycamores a 35-30
lead at the intermission.
Drake finished the first 20 minutes shooting 38.5 percent
from the floor, while Indiana State connected on 46.4 percent of its attempts.
Simons paced the Bulldogs with an eight-point effort in the
first half.
Simons began the final 20 minutes with a jumper to cut the
margin to 35-32, before the Sycamores stretched the lead to 41-34, scoring six
of the next eight points.
A jumper by sophomore Seth VanDeest (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) began
a 6-0 Drake run that ultimately cut the deficit to one, 41-40, with 14:21 left
to play.
Wedel made a pair of free throws after Myles Walker was
whistled for a technical as a result of an elbow to the head of sophomore Reece Uhlenhopp
(Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) and then Rice nailed two more at the charity
stripe.
Indiana State followed with six unanswered points en route
to a 10-2 run to assume a 50-42 lead, one they didn't relinquish in the affair.
Drake whittled the advantage down to five, 68-63, after a
three pointer by Wedel with 2:10 remaining, but that was as close as the
Bulldogs got.
Odum paced all players for Indiana State with a 20-point,
10-rebound performance, while Carl Richard joined him in double figures with 20
points as well.
Connecting on 5-of-7 shots from the field, VanDeest led the
Bulldogs with a 17-point effort.
Also pouring in double-figures contests were Wedel and Simons with 14
and 10 points, respectively.
Wedel registered a team-high six rebounds for Drake, who
committed only eight turnovers, while forcing Indiana State into nine.
The Sycamores won the rebounding column, 34-32, despite the
Bulldogs owning an 11-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
Drake returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 15) as the Bulldogs
visit Missouri State for a 7:05 p.m. tilt.
