Beginning its drive
to capture its fourth Missouri Valley Conference regular season
title in the last five seasons, the 71st-rated Drake men's tennis team
registered the Bulldogs seventh consecutive victory dispatching of Creighton,
7-0, in the league opener for both schools on Saturday (March 26).
Drake set the tone in
the contest sweeping the doubles competition with the 72nd-rated duo of senior Mauricio Ballivian (Santa
Cruz, Bolivia) and sophomore Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) securing the doubles point downing
J.T. Christian and Billy Paluch, 8-3, at the No. 1 position.
Ballivian added a
triumph at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Paluch to extend the Bulldogs'
advantage to 2-0.
Sophomore Jean Erasmus (Windhoek,
Namibia) stretched the margin to within one point of victory besting Kyle
Obermeier at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Cesar Bracho (Luque,
Paraguay) booked the match in the win column for Drake defeating Gabe Nagy
at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1.
Also garnering
triumphs for the Bulldogs were sophomore James McKie (Endinburgh, Scotland), Ghorbel and
sophomore Ryan Drake (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) at the Nos. 2, 4 and 6 slots, respectively.
Drake returns to
action on April 2 stepping out of conference to battle Western Michigan in an
11:00 a.m. match in Rockford, Ill.
