AUGUST 19, 2011
DES MOINES, Iowa - A pair of
second-half goals by Iowa State (1-0) spoiled the home opener for the Drake
women's soccer team (0-1) as the Cyclones registered a 2-0 triumph on Friday
(Aug. 19) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
"Tonight we were much improved," Bulldog head coach Lindsey Horner commented. "The
return of a number of healthy players, who missed our exhibition games,
certainly helped us. The game
opened up in the second half. We
created some good scoring opportunities as we hit the crossbar and post."
The previous two encounters between the
in-state rivals had resulted in double-overtime scoreless draws and the contest
appeared destined for a repeat performance.
Hayley Womack ended that possibility flicking
the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Kalena Litch (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) off a header from Addison Nokels at the
70:28 mark to give Iowa State a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones added an insurance goal in
the 85th minute (84:13) on an unassisted tally from Brittany Morgan to provide
the final 2-0 margin.
Drake's best scoring opportunity in the
affair occurred in the 59th minute as junior Kasey Wellman (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) struck a ball in the
box which smashed off the crossbar before deflecting down to fellow junior Tara Zika (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline),
who nailed a shot that was corralled by Iowa State goalkeeper Maddie Jobe at
the 58:49 mark.
The Cyclones won the battle of shots
outshooting the Bulldogs, 18-8.
Shots on goal were nearly even with Iowa State owning a 5-4
advantage.
Zika and junior Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) paced Drake with two
shots apiece, while the Cyclones were led by a game-high four shots from
Womack.
Litch recorded three saves in the
contest, while Jobe pulled in four for Iowa State.
"It was an exciting environment, with a
lot of fans, and end-to-end action in the second half," Horner said. "There are
a lot of positives we can takes from tonight, but we still have some aspects of
the game we need to tidy up."
The Bulldogs will look to even their
ledger when they host Green Bay on Sunday (Aug. 21) at the Cownie Soccer
Complex. Game time is slated for
1:00 p.m.
