DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake
women's soccer team failed to capitalize offensively as Katie Condon's
goal in the 87th minute (86:52) provided Western Illinois with a 1-0 victory
past the Bulldogs on Sunday (Sept. 4) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
"Today's result is frustrating as we dominated in possession; however
you have to give credit Western Illinois for being more physical and converting
their best chance," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented.
"I felt when our backs showed composure
and were willing to get forward, we were very good until we got into the final
third. We are asking a lot out of our outside backs and two of our three
shots on goal came from them joining in the attack. We need some
attacking players to emerge as the one who wants to take over the game in the
final third."
For the second consecutive contest Drake was shutout as the Bulldogs have
gone a span of more than 213 minutes since their last goal, in a 1-1
double-overtime draw against Southern Utah (Aug. 28).
Condon's tally came off a loose-ball scramble in front of the net after
Trisha Quinn delivered a corner kick from the left corner.
The Bulldogs posted a 9-6 advantage in shots in the affair, including
5-2 in the second half, but were unable to convert on their best scoring
opportunity when senior Danielle Figliola's (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) shot
at the 55:39 mark hit the post.
Drake was unable to capitalize on the deflection.
Condon led all players with a game-high three shots, while the Bulldogs
garnered two shots apiece courtesy of Figliola, sophomore Brittany Schuling (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar), junior Laura Moklestad (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt)
and senior Angela Chigazola (Santa
Rosa, Calif./Maria Carillo).
Sophomore goalkeeper Kalena Litch
(Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) pulled in two saves for the Bulldogs, while Victoria
Kappel recorded three stops for the Westerwinds.
Drake returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 8) with its lone tilt of the
week, a 7:00 p.m. showdown at UMKC.
