DES MOINES, Iowa - The No. 62 Drake men's tennis team
went late into the night to extend its winning streak to nine straight, as the
Bulldogs registered a 7-0 victory over Butler on Saturday (Feb. 25) at the
Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The two team didn't hit
the court until nearly 9:00 p.m. and despite the late hour partook in a
spirited round of doubles in which Drake swept all three matches.
Clinching the doubles
tally for the Bulldogs at No. 2 was the tandem of junior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia) and sophomore Robin Goodman (Cambridge,
England), who posted an 8-6 decision against Zach Ervin and Tommy Marx.
In singles, junior James McKie (Edinburgh,
Scotland) and Goodman extended the lead to 3-0 following triumphs at the Nos. 3
and 4 positions, respectively.
McKie bested Pulok
Bhattacharya, 6-1, 6-0, while Goodman downed Ervin, 6-0, 6-2.
Earning the deciding
tally in the affair on the strength of a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 was freshman Ben Mullis (Leicestershire,
England).
Drake also garnered
victories on the Nos. 1, 2 and 6 courts courtesy of 73rd-ranked junior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax,
Tunisia), Eramus and senior Cesar Bracho (Luque, Paraguay).
The Bulldogs return
to action hosting in-state rival Iowa on Wednesday (Feb. 29) in a 6:00 p.m.
showdown at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
