OMAHA, Neb. - The Drake Bulldogs
lost to the Creighton Bluejays, 6-2, Tuesday in the first game of a six-game
road swing.
Creighton
(25-19-1, 14-6 MVC) scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
to take the game from Drake (20-25, 11-10 MVC).
Jordan
Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) took the tough loss for the Bulldogs as the
sophomore scattered eight hits and allowed six runs but just two earned in six
innings of work. Gronewold struck out ten Bluejays for her third double-digit
strikeout game but she falls to 15-18 with the loss.
The Bluejays
went on the board first with a home run by leadoff hitter, Ellen Homan and an
RBI single by Blair Lowe in the bottom of the first inning.
Drake
responded in the top of the second with a two-RBI single by Nicole Randel
(Alpine, Calif.), it was her MVC-leading seventh pinch-hit this season.
Creighton
started the sixth inning with a leadoff walk by Lowe and a sacrifice bunt
advanced her to second base. Liz Dike was next and she hit a ball to Bulldog
right fielder Jaimie Duffek (Brookfield, Ill.), who misplayed it and was
charged with her first error of the season. Dike was able to advance all the
way to third on the error and she would score on a passed ball to extend the
lead to 4-2. Allie Matthewson added the final two Bluejay runs with a two-run
home run.
Duffek was
the top hitter for Drake going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Torey Craddock
(Tucson, Ariz.) and Sam West (Kearney, Mo.) joined Randel with one hit each for
Drake.
