DES MOINES, Iowa - A pair of
second-half goals propelled Marquette to a 2-0 victory past Drake in men's
soccer action on Sunday (Sept. 2) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
The two sides waged a nearly equal affair in the initial stanza as both teams registered seven shots and entered the intermission scoreless.
The Golden Eagles were first to crack the scoring column on the strength
of Andy Huftalin's tally in the 48th minute (47:22). What proved to be the game-winning goal was set-up by
assists from DJ Schillinger and Adam Lysak.
Marquette tacked on an insurance score at the 71:00 mark when Bryan
Ciesiulka converted on a successful penalty kick to extend the Golden Eagles'
advantage to 2-0.
The Bulldogs had their opportunities to score in the final stanza
registering six shots, but Drake was unable to capitalize en route to suffering
the setback.
Each team recorded 13 shots in the affair, with junior Logan North (St. Charles, Mo./Francis
Howell North) collecting a team-high three shots for Drake. Huftalin and Ciesiulka each posted
three shots apiece for Marquette.
Redshirt junior Rich Gallagher
(Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) pulled in four saves for the Bulldogs,
while his counterpart Charlie Lyon matched him with four stops.
Drake returns to action on Friday (Sept. 7) with a 5:00 p.m. tilt versus
No. 25 Northwestern as part of the Northern Illinois Tournament in DeKalb, Ill.
