Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) carded a two-round score of 147 (73-74) leading the Drake men's golf team to a 36-hole total of 606 (302-304) on the first day of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate hosted by UMKC on Monday (Oct. 14) at the Milburn Golf and Country Club.
Steele followed an opening-round 73 with a 74 over the final 18 holes to sit tied for 12th place.
On the strength of a 73 in the opening round, redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) posted a 151 (73-78) scorecard, good for a tie for 38th place.
“I thought Connor (Steele) played solid from start to finish today and put himself in position for a strong finish tomorrow,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “Devin (Leland) didn't hit the ball well, but he was able to get up and down most of the day scoring well for how poorly he hit it.”
Rounding out Drake's scoring efforts were sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.), senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) and junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) with 36-holes totals of 154 (78-76/T-57th), 154 (78-76/T-57th) and 160 (81-79/T-76th), respectively.
“We are in a cluster of 7-8 teams in the standings and I feel good about tomorrow,” said Lewis. “Hopefully we can put together a good final round tomorrow and move up a little in the final standings.”
The Bulldogs closes out their stay at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Oct. 15) with Drake teeing off starting at 8:50 a.m.
