ST. LOUIS – Drake junior shortstop Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) was selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Pierce along with Landon Curry of the Indiana State baseball team were honored for their performances during the week of April 15-21.
Pierce went 5-for-10 (.500) with one double, two home runs including a grand slam, four stolen bases, six runs scored and six RBI for the week. In Saturday's 10-6 win over Bradley, she was 3-for-6 with two stolen bases, three runs scored, two home runs and a career-high six RBI. Pierce holds a 3.47 cumulative GPA in Pharmacy and is a two-time MVC scholar athlete selection.
The Kansas native leads the team in batting average (.368), runs (44), hits (53), doubles (11), stolen bases (24), on-base percentage (.432) and slugging percentage (.646). She is tied with Hayley Nybo for the home run lead with nine.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
