DES MOINES, Iowa – An early offensive outburst sparked the Drake University softball team to a 13-1 win over Indiana State Sunday afternoon at Ron Buel Field.
Junior Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.) led the Drake (21-14, 7-3 MVC) offense with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Macie Silliman (Winterset, Iowa) and sophomore Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) went 3-for-3, while junior Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa) batted 2-for-2. Wood had two RBI, while Silliman and Nybo each plated a runner.
Getting the start for the Bulldogs was junior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) who went three innings allowing one run on four hits to earn the win and move to 12-7 on the season. Gronewold went 1-for-2 with a one run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) pitched the final two innings and allowed two hits, one walk and struck out two hitters.
Drake wasted little time at the plate taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nybo plated the first run on a single that extended her hitting streak to 14 games. Randel followed with a double that scored another run, while Wood drove in two runs on her single to center field.
Randel narrowly missed a grand slam in the second inning, driving in two runs on a double off the top of the outfield fence. Her hit started a flurry of runs, as the Bulldogs took a 10-0 advantage after two innings of play.
Drake added three runs in the third frame and one more in the fourth inning. Megan Bunting led Indiana State (13-23, 3-9 MVC) at the plate going 2-for-2, while Kelsey Montgomery was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The Bulldogs play next at Iowa State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Cyclones travel to Ron Buel Field the following day for a 4 p.m. matchup. Wednesday's game at Ron Buel Field was rescheduled from March 26.
