DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake softball junior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) earned 2013 Capital One Academic All-District VII First-Team honors as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced yesterday.
Pierce, a two-year starter at shortstop, is a pharmacy major carrying 18 hours this semester. The MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week for April 15, she owns a 3.41 cumulative grade point average and is a two-time All-MVC scholar-athlete selection.
The award is recognition for Pierce's hard work both on the field and in the classroom. The Academic All-District honor is the first for the Pierce. Pierce is the only pharmacy major to be selected in the entire country.
The Olathe, Kansas native is having a tremendous year for the Bulldogs, as leads the team in batting average (.369), runs (48), hits (59), doubles (12), stolen bases (26), on-base percentage (.436) and slugging percentage (.625). In the Missouri Valley Conference statistical categories, she is first in runs scored, second in hits, third in doubles and stolen bases, fourth in batting average, fifth in slugging percentage and tied for sixth in home runs (9). She is the Drake single-season record holder for runs scored.
As a First Team All-District member Pierce will be placed on a national ballot for an opportunity to be recognized as an Academic All-America selection, while competing against other student-athletes from across the country.
Brynne Dordel and Molly McClelland were the last Drake softball student-athletes to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2011.
