Richardson Directs Drake On Day One Of Jim Colbert Intercollegiate

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) posted scores of 76 and 77 to pace the efforts of the Drake men's golf team over the opening two rounds of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate hosted by Kansas State on Monday (Sept. 30).

Richardson sits 14th on the leader board with a 36-hole mark of 153 (76-77), while collectively, the Bulldogs are eighth in the team standings with a 639 (324-315) tournament scorecard.

“Scores were extremely high in the first round for everyone, and all the teams, as we did, lowered their scores in the second round,” Bulldog head coach Matt Lewis commented. “The conditions were perfect today, this is just a very challenging course and we got off to a very rough start across the board and most guys really didn't recover.”

“In the second round, Brady (Richardson) shot a 77, Dane (Worley) came back with a 75, which is a good comeback, Matt (Ohl) had a 78, we just didn't have the fourth score to post a respectable round.  We know we improved in the second round, but we really struggled in the opening round, which is disappointing.”

Senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) was the Bulldogs' next top finisher completing his initial 36 holes with a 158 (80-78) scorecard, good for a tie for 27th place.

Rounding out Drake's scoring contingent were junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), freshman Karter Smith (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and in his first competition of the fall, sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.).  The trio garnered 33rd-, 48th- and 52nd-place finishes, respectively, with two-round totals of 160 (85-75), 168 (83-85) and 179 (89-90).

In his initial tournament of the fall, redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) competed as an individual and fired a 36-hole score of 161 (83-78) to stand in 35th place.

“A lot can happen on this course over 18 holes, so one low round could really shoot us up the leader board,” said Lewis. “We had a lot of big numbers and three putts and as a team that killed us.  We want to limit those big numbers and three putts and capitalize on our scoring opportunities tomorrow and have a good finish.”

Competition at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate concludes on Tuesday (Oct. 1) with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

DRAKE RESULTS: Brady Richardson (76-77=153/14th), Matt Ohl (80-78=158/T-27th), Dane Worley (85-75=160/33rd), Devin Leland (83-78=161/35th), Karter Smith (83-85=168/48th) and Will McDonald (89-90=179/52nd).
