TULSA, OKLA. - In its first showdown with a nationally ranked squad this season, the 30th-ranked Drake men's tennis squad suffered a 4-1 setback at No. 25 Tulsa on Sunday (Jan. 19).
In the first match between the two teams since 2004, Drake and Tulsa split decisions at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles positions to set up a showdown on the No. 2 court for the doubles point.
Juniors Matt Frost (Cambridge, England) and Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England) posted a 6-4 win for the Bulldogs at the No. 3 slot versus Carlos Bautista and Daniel Santos.
In the deciding affair at No. 2, the Golden Hurricane clinched the doubles tally with a 6-4 triumph.
In singles, Tulsa extended its advantage to 3-0 after victories on the No. 1 and 3 courts, respectively.
Senior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) accounted for the Bulldogs' lone point in the affair besting No. 71 Bautista, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.
Sophomore Ben Lott (Newcastle, England) waged a three-set battle against Clifford Marsland at No. 2 before ultimately suffering a 5-6 (7), 6-5 (6), 2-6 setback.
Junior Ravi Patel (London, England) and Mullis were both leading their respective matches at the Nos. 5 and 6 slots when the contest was halted.
Drake closes out its road swing on Monday (Jan. 20) with a 10:00 a.m. tilt versus SMU in Tulsa, Okla.
