WACO, Texas - In a battle of nationally ranked opponents No. 28 Auburn registered a 4-1 victory past the 32nd-rated Drake men's tennis team on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-off Weekend.
The Tigers (4-0) staked themselves to a 1-0 in the affair after besting the Bulldogs (2-2) at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles slots.
Auburn extended its advantage to 3-0 in singles with victories on the top two courts.
After dropping the initial set in his match at No. 4 versus Petar Tomic, junior Matt Frost (Cambridge, England) garnered Drake's lone point in the match rallying to post a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 three-set triumph.
Dennis Lengsfeld clinched the win for the Tigers at the No. 3 position edging senior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England), 2-6, 6-5 (7), 6-4.
The Bulldogs were one point away from collecting three-set triumphs at the Nos. 5 and 6 slots when play was halted. Junior Ravi Patel (London, England) held a 5-6 (4), 6-4, 5-0 advantage over No. 89 Dante Saleh at No. 5, while junior Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England) was leading Joseph Van Dooren at No. 6, 6-5 (5), 3-6, 5-4.
Drake returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 26) with a 10:00 a.m. showdown versus No. 47 Boise State at the ITA Kick-off Weekend in Waco, Texas.
