Edel's Golden Goal Lifts Drake To 2-1 Double-OT Win Over Loyola

DES MOINES, Iowa - A golden goal by freshman Gabe Edel (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) in the 103rd minute (102:07) lifted Drake (3-7-2, 1-1 MVC) to a 2-1 double-overtime triumph past Loyola (4-4-2, 1-1 MVC) in Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer action on Saturday (Oct. 11) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

The game-winning score was set-up by a pass from the corner by freshman Sam Graving (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston), who collected his first career point with the assist. The goal also represented the first tally in the collegiate career of Edel.

The Bulldogs played with a man advantage in the game over the final 26:23 of regulation and overtime after Elliot Collier was whistled for his second yellow card of the game at the 75:44 mark.

Both sides were not without chances over the final 14:16 minutes of regulation after the card infraction as the two teams combined for six shots, including one by Loyola's Brody Kraussel that redshirt junior Alec Bartlett (Overland Park, Kan./St. James Academy) was able to clear off the line for his second team save of the evening with only 18 seconds left in regulation.

Each side recorded a shot in the initial overtime session before the Bulldogs collected three shots, including the game-winner, in the second overtime period.

Drake finished the affair earning a 24-16 margin in shots, including 14-11 on goal. A pair of game-high five-shot performances from Bartlett and redshirt sophomore Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) led the Bulldogs. Drake also received four shots apiece courtesy of Edel and junior Eric Williams (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley). Collier directed the Ramblers with a team-high four shots.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) pulled in eight saves for the Bulldogs, while his counterpart in net for Loyola, Tim Dobrowolski made 11 saves.

The Ramblers delivered the game's first goal when Kevin Engesser connected on his initial goal of the season at the 15:40 mark.  Kraussel served the ball into the box to Engesser who headed a ball that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounded down behind the line for the goal.

Williams netted the equalizer for the Bulldogs in the 40th minute (39:22) off an assist from LeMay. The ball from LeMay was delivered from the midfield and bounced off the Loyola defender on a 1v1 and bounded onto the chest of Williams, who collected the ball and beat Dobrowolski for his first goal of the season.

Drake returns to action traveling to SIU Edwardsville next Saturday (Oct. 18) for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
