OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Senior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) shot a final-round 74 to lead the Drake men's golf team to an 11th-place showing at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate hosted by UMKC on Tuesday (Oct. 14) at the Milburn Country Club with a cumulative team score of 625 (314-311).
Worley's efforts over the tournament's final 18 holes gave him the Bulldogs' best finish tying for 26th place with a 154 (80-74) scorecard.
“We talked about having four guys shoot in the mid-70's today and we had two, but two different from yesterday, so that was good,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “Conditions were again extremely tough with 30 mph winds and gusts up to 40 mph, probably the toughest we have faced in a few years, so shooting par with scores in the mid-70's in theses conditions was excellent. We would have liked to get a couple more scores; we just didn't have the three of four we needed to make a jump in the final standings.”
After opening the tournament with a round of 88, freshman Matt Lavery (Peoria, Ill.) bounced back during second-day competition to record a 77, the second-best score for a Bulldog over the final 18 holes.
“Dane (Worley) had a nice bounce-back round today and I thought Matt (Lavery) played really well minus a triple bogey on one of his final holes,” said Lewis.
Two strokes off Worley's pace was sophomore Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.), who carded a 36-hole total of 156 (76-80), to wrap up his tournament tied for 34th place.
Redshirt junior Blake Huser (Altoona, Iowa) and freshman Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.) rounded out Drake's efforts with scores of 80 and 86 over the final round to collect identical 36-hole scorecards of 162 (82-80) and 162 (76-86), respectively.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (Oct. 19) traveling to Powells Point, N.C., to compete at the OBX Intercollegiate hosted by Old Dominion University. The 54-hole event will run from Sunday (Oct. 19) through Tuesday (Oct. 21).
