POWELLS POINT, N.C. - Sophomore Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) fired a career-low 71 to lead the Drake men's golf team into a share of first place after 18 holes of the ODU/Outer Banks Invitational on Sunday (Oct. 19).
The Bulldogs' 294 cumulative score represents the lowest 18-hole effort for Drake this fall. On a leaderboard where first through 10th place is separated by only four strokes, the Bulldogs are tied with Maryland for first place.
“We were the first group off this morning and we really didn't know what we shot and where it would put us when we finished,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “I thought we played pretty well although we did falter a little on our finish, the scores are pretty bunched up, but we are on the crux side of the standings, so I guess we can be proud of what we did today. It is another day tomorrow and there is a lot of golf left, but we are happy with where we are. I'm happy about today, we are ready to move on to another good day tomorrow and we'll keep playing.”
For the third time in his career and second time this fall, Richardson carded a 71 to enter Monday's (Oct. 20) second round tied for fourth place.
Senior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and freshman Matt Lavery (Peoria, Ill.) each fired opening-round 74s to stand tied for 20th-place. Lavery's score established a new career-low mark after twice this season registering a round of 77.
One shot off their pace after registering a 75 was freshman Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.), who is tied for 29th place.
Redshirt junior Blake Huser (Altoona, Iowa) rounded out Drake's efforts on the day shooting an 18-hole mark of 78.
The ODU/Outer Banks Invitational resumes on Monday (Oct. 20) with tee times being utilized from 7:30-9:30 a.m. CT.
DRAKE RESULTS: Brady Richardson (71/T-4th), Dane Worley (74/T-20th), Matt Lavery (74/T-20th), Drew Ison (75/T-29th) and Blake Huser (78/T-55th).
