HOUSTON, Texas - Senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) carded a final-round 77 to lead the Drake men's golf team to a 13th-place finish with a 924 (313-298-313=924) scorecard on the final day of the Rice Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Feb. 18).
“I was disappointed in how we played and I know the guys were as well,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “No one really played well today, it was a struggle throughout."
“Two things that really hurt us today were we didn't putt well, as we missed lot of short puts across board, and we had lot of big numbers. These were two things that really didn't happen during our first and second rounds. Our ball striking was better today, but we just didn't score.”
Ohl was the lone Bulldog to improve upon his second-round performance concluding his tournament with a 239 (82-80-77) total.
Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) was Drake's top finisher with a 229 (75-71-83) scorecard, good for a 36th-place effort.
Redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) came in two shots off his pace with a 231 (77-76-78) total.
Rounding out the Bulldogs' efforts were junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Ohl. The trio fired three-round totals of 233 (80-75-78), 237 (81-76-80) and 239 (82-80-77) to collect 56th-, 74th- and 79th-place showings, respectively.
“It was not the round we wanted, obviously we are disappointed, but we learned lot from this last week,” said Lewis. “The good news is we have an event in a week and a half and we'll be more prepared for that. We learned a lot from and we will definitely benefit from the tournament this week in our future events.”
Drake returns to action on March 1 traveling to Phoenix, Ariz., to compete at the Big Four Championship.
