JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Redshirt junior
Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) and sophomore
Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) each carded rounds of 74 to spark the Drake men's golf team to a fifth-place showing after 18 holes of the Benbow Invitational on Monday (March 10).
The Bulldogs registered a team scorecard of 300 sit in fifth place among the 12 competing schools, seven strokes off the pace of tournament leader, Evansville.
“All the guys played roughly the same today with our best round in my opinion coming from Will (McDonald), who made a nice comeback shooting a 34 on the back nine after posting a 40 on the front nine,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “We missed a few strokes down the stretch and that really had an effect on our team score. It was tough to score today. The greens were rough which made putting a challenge. We are one good round tomorrow away from a really good finish and we'll use that as motivation for the final round.”
Seniors Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) and Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) each posted scores of 76 for the Bulldogs, while junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out Drake's scoring efforts with a 78 scorecard.
The final round of the Benbow Invitational is set for Tuesday (March 11) with tee times starting at 10:30 a.m. CT.
DRAKE RESULTS: Devin Leland (74/T-10th), Will McDonald (74/T-10th), Connor Steele (76/T-20th), Matt Ohl (76/T-20th) and Dane Worley (78/T-30th),
