JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) shot a final-round 72 to lead the Drake men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Benbow Invitational on Tuesday (March 11).
McDonald's 36-hole scorecard of 146 was good for a fifth-place effort, while the Bulldogs registered a 595 (300-295) total, four strokes behind Cleveland State for third place.
“It was a solid tournament for Will (McDonald) as he played very well outside of a couple of penalty strokes,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “Scores again were high today because of the rough conditions of the greens, but we improved our score from yesterday to today.”
Redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) carded a 74 over the tournament's final 18 holes to finish two strokes off McDonald's pace. Leland posted a 148 (74-74) tournament scorecard.
The Bulldogs also received final-round efforts of 74, 75 and 79, respectively, from seniors Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa) and Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), along with junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).
“Individually, we were hoping for more, but we felt decent about our performance," said Lewis. "It is a good tournament to build upon heading into our event next week in Arizona."
Drake returns to competition at the Desert Shootout (March 20-22) in Goodyear, Ariz.
DRAKE RESULTS: Will McDonald (74-72=146/T-5th), Devin Leland (74-74=148/T-11th), Matt Ohl (76-74=150/18th), Connor Steele (76-75=151/T-19th) and Dane Worley (78-79=157/T-38th)
