GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Junior
Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) equaled a career low firing an opening-round 70 to lead the Drake men's golf team to a 292 scorecard after one round of the Desert Shootout on Thursday (March 20) at the Palm Valley Country Club.
The Bulldogs find themselves 12th of 15 teams in a crowded leaderboard after the tournament's initial 18 holes.
“Dane (Worley) and Will (McDonald) each played solid today for us,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “I think they both thought they left some shots out on the course, but they were pleased with their scores. We were really one good score away from being in a really good position. We feel that if we go out there tomorrow and have one or two more guys turn in a low score we can move up in the team standings.”
Sophomore Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) turned in his fourth consecutive round of 75 or lower for the Bulldogs, carding a 72 to open tournament play.
Garnering rounds of 75 were redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) and senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa), while senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out Drake's field with a 76.
The Bulldogs open second-round competition at the Desert Shootout on Friday (March 21) with a 10:00 a.m. CT shotgun start.
DRAKE RESULTS: Dane Worley (70), Will McDonald (72), Devin Leland (75), Matt Ohl (75) and Connor Steele (76).
