GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Sophomore
Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) fired a career-low 69 to lead the Drake men's golf team to a 282 second-round effort at the Desert Shootout on Friday (March 21) at the Palm Valley Country Club.
McDonald turned in his fifth consecutive round of 75 or lower for the Bulldogs to tie for 19th in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 141.
As a team, the Bulldogs turned in their lowest round of the year and enter Saturday's final round tied for 11th among the 15 competing teams with a 574 (292-282) scorecard.
“We dropped 10 strokes today, so I was really pleased with our effort as all five guys are in it and playing well,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “I'm happy with our improvement and that all five guys playing well and I hope to see the same tomorrow.”
Junior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) is tied for 34th place, two strokes off McDonald's pace with a 36-hole scorecard of 143 (70-73).
Shooting identical rounds of 71 for the Bulldogs was redshirt junior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) and senior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa). The duo each own tournament totals of 146 and are tied for 47th place.
Senior Connor Steele (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) rounded out Drake's field equaling a season-low round recording a 71 to enter the tournament's final round with a 36-hole total of 147, to tie for 52nd place.
The Bulldogs close out competition at the Desert Shootout with a 9:30 a.m. CT shotgun start on Saturday (March 22).
