PHILADELPHIA - The Drake University rowing team's varsity 4+ boat placed fourth in its semifinal heat on the Schuylkill River at the 2014 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday.
Senior Brittany Michael (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) along with sophomores Kelsey Leahy (Madison, Wis.), Alex Lueck (West Allis, Wis.), Katie Serbin (Hannibal, Mo.) and coxswain Bri Varela (Olathe, Kan.), finished with a time of 08:03.471 for Drake in the Division I women's open weight 4+ race.
Bowdoin College out of Maine took first in the heat with a time of 07:41.206, while Nova Southeastern (Canada) (07:49.000) and Drexel (07:54.511) were second and third, respectively. UConn (08:12.295) and MIT (08:17.275) rounded out the six-team heat. The Bulldogs needed a first or second place showing to move to the final.
“It wasn't how we wanted to end the season,” said head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. “But I'm very proud of how this group came together and trained for this event. This is a young group that can take this experience and build on it.”
This was the 20th consecutive year Drake participated in the Dad Vail. The Dad Vail was the final regatta of the 2014 season for the Bulldogs.
