DES MOINES, Iowa - A pair of unanswered goals spoiled the home debut of the Drake women's soccer team on Friday (Aug. 29) as Saint Louis (2-1) registered a come-from-behind 2-1 triumph past the Bulldogs (1-2) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Playing defensive soccer for the majority of a first half in which the Billikens outshot Drake, 9-3, senior Ashlie Stokes (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) gave the Bulldogs the early advantage on the strength of her second goal of the season at the 37:43 mark. A strong feed from junior Maddie Nelson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) found the seam in the middle of the box resulting in an assist after Stokes converted the pass into a goal to give Drake a 1-0 lead.
Saint Louis netted the equalizer in the 59th minute (58:27) when Michelle Schwartz delivered a kick into the box from the corner that Kirsten Clemens converted into her third goal of the season.
Just over 10 minutes later at the 68:35 mark, Tori Marshall recorded what proved to be the game-winning tally striking a corner kick from Lauren Tondl past Drake sophomore goalkeeper Kylynn Moyer (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) for her first goal of the year.
The Billikens edged the Bulldogs in shots in the affair, 26-6, including 14-5 on net. Stokes paced Drake with a team-high three-shot effort. In her first action of the season after competing with the Haitian National Team, senior Generve Charles (Wausau, Wis./Wausau) connected on a pair of shots for the Bulldogs. Clemens registered a game-high six shots for Saint Louis.
Moyer finished the contest collecting a career-best 11 saves for Drake, while Hanna Benben made four saves for the Billikens.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (Aug. 31) entertaining Fresno State in a 12:00 p.m. tilt at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
