NORMAL, Ill. - Senior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) fired a career-low 69 to spark the Drake men's golf team to a sixth-place showing at the rain-shortened D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Sunday (Sept. 14).
Rain and thunderstorms in the area forced the cancellation on Monday's (Sept. 15) final round.
The Bulldogs tied for sixth place with fellow Missouri Valley Conference foes Bradley and Loyola after carding a 594 (299-295) scorecard, 10 strokes behind tournament leader Illinois State.
“Much like last week, we got off to a poor start in the second round as we were giving away some strokes, but I was happy with our finish over the last few holes,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “We are 10 strokes out of the lead with a lot of teams sandwiched in between, but we put ourselves in position to have a good finish with a strong round tomorrow, but we have to play a little better.”
On the strength of his second-round 69, Worley was Drake's top finisher tying for 14th place with a 36-hole score of 145 (76-69).
“Dane continued his play strong play from last week as he hit the ball solid all day,” said Lewis. “He had a great second round birdying three of his final four holes. It was an awesome finish that was a huge boost for us to get someone under par.”
Sophomore Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) finished three strokes of Worley's pace registering back-to-back rounds of 74 for a two-round total of 148 (74-74).
Three shots separated junior Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.), freshman Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.) and redshirt senior Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) as the trio concluded their efforts with 36-hole marks of 151 (74-77), 152 (77-75) and 154 (75-79), respectively.
