DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake women's soccer team was unable to overcome a one-goal deficit as South Dakota (7-4) registered a 1-0 triumph past the Bulldogs (5-6) on Wednesday (Sept. 24) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
The Coyotes took early advantage of Drake in the affair as Corey Strang scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 20th minute (19:23) to give South Dakota a lead it didn't relinquish.
The Bulldogs had few scoring opportunities in the first half as the Coyotes recorded a 6-3 advantage in shots.
Drake came out in the final stanza and elevated its game registering a 12-7 margin in shots.
Sophomore Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) turned in the Bulldogs' best scoring chances as her shot at the 71:37 mark hit the crossbar, while her attempt in the 75th minute (74:14) went wide.
Junior Kylie DeHaven (Olathe, Kan./Olathe) followed with a strong shot on goal that was corralled by South Dakota goalkeeper Sydney Hardin for the save at the 83:44 mark.
Drake finished the evening posting a 15-13 advantage in shots, but was outmuscled on shots on goal, 6-2.
Sophomore Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) led the Bulldogs with a team-high three shots, while DeHaven, Rodgers and juniors Rhian Pritchard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North), Maddie Nelson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) and Alex Freeman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) finished with two shots apiece. A game-high four-shot performance from Strang paced the Coyotes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kylynn Moyer (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) collected five saves for the Bulldogs. Hardin and Mackenzie Viktor each recorded a save for South Dakota en route to combining to earn the shutout.
Drake returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 28) opening Missouri Valley Conference play with a 1:00 p.m. tilt versus Evansville at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
