MADISON, Wis. – Senior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and freshman Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.) shot identical second-round scores of 75 to headline the efforts of the Drake men's golf team on Monday (Sept. 29) at the Badger Invitational.
The Bulldogs shaved five strokes off their opening-round performance carding a 306 cumulative scorecard to move up one spot to 12th place with a 617 (311-306) total.
“We set a couple goals as a team today; to play our par-5's better and to make sure our misses were in the right spot and for the most part we did that,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “Two things that hurt us today were we had a lot of big numbers and that we finished the last three holes at 10-over par.”
“The conditions were a little tougher today as the winds caused the greens and fairways to firm up a little more, but we just were not able to finish.”
The Bulldogs' tournament leader, Ison will enter the final round tied for 22nd place with a 36-hole mark of 149 (74-75).
Sophomore Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) recorded a 79 during the second round and maintains a 46th-place showing (75-79=154).
Freshman Matt Lavery (Peoria, Ill.) improved on his opening-round 80 carding a career-low 77 to head into the final round tied with Worley with a 157 total.
Junior Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) rounded out the efforts of the Bulldogs with a 36-hole score of 168 (82-86).
“We are on the right track, I'm a little more disappointed today because I knew that we were in position for a solid round as we were playing better, but our finish hurt us,” said Lewis. “We'll address some things tonight and look for improvement tomorrow, as there is room to hopefully move up a few spots.”
The final round of the Badger Invitational gets underway with a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 30).
DRAKE RESULTS: Drew Ison (74-75=149/T-22nd), Brady Richardson (75-79=154/T-46th), Matt Lavery (80-77=157/T-57th), Dane Worley (82-75=157/T-57th) and Will McDonald (82-86=168/T-77th).
