MADISON, Wis. - Sophomore Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla.) equaled a career low shooting a final-round 71 to lead the Drake men's golf team to a 12th-place finish at the Badger Invitational on Tuesday (Sept. 30).
Weather changed dramatically for the tournament's final round from temperatures in the 80s the past two days to 45 degrees at the start of today's shotgun start. The Bulldogs persevered through the conditions to conclude their tournaments efforts with a 923 (911-906-906) cumulative scorecard recording a 306 total over the final 18 holes.
“The weather definitely made an impact today as the course was more challenging,” Drake head coach Matt Lewis commented. “The wind and cold proved to be factors today as the ball wasn't traveling as far, so it was definitely a different course for the guys. The course itself played a little longer after they moved some of the par-3's pin locations back for the final round.”
By virtue of equaling a career-low mark, Richardson posted a team-best score of 225 (75-79-71) to round out his tournament tied for 29th place.
“Brady (Richardson) played great today and really was in it from the get-go as he had a nice start birdying two of the first three holes,” said Lewis. “I'm happy he was able to bounce back after a second-round 79 yesterday, including triple bogeying the last hole, so that shows his determination. The rest of the guys all shot about the same in the 70s and we just didn't have those 2-3 scores that would have made a difference.”
One stroke off his pace was freshman Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.), who registered a 226 (74-75-77) scorecard.
Senior Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and freshman Matt Lavery (Peoria, Ill.) carved out final-round scores of 78 and 80, respectively, to finish their tournaments with 235 (82-75-78) and 237 (80-77-80) totals.
Junior Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) rounded out the Bulldogs' performances at the Badger Invitational with a 54-hole score of 250 (82-86-82).
“Our goal today was to move up a few spots and we were close,” explained Lewis. “I'm disappointed with that, but happy for Brady as it was challenging today with the conditions.”
Drake returns to competition Oct. 13-14 traveling to Kansas City, Mo., to participate in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate hosted by UMKC.
