DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake men's soccer team unleashed its offensive potential registering three first-half goals en route to collecting its first victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph past Green Bay (1-2) on Friday (Sept. 5) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Sophomore James Wypych's (Wellington, New Zealand) got the scoring started for the Bulldogs (1-1-1) notching his second goal of the campaign in the fourth minute (3:54) to give Drake a 1-0 lead. Redshirt sophomore Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) garnered the assist on the tally sliding a pass into the top of the box for Wypych, who converted on the feed for the goal.
Freshman Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan./St. James Academy) extended the Bulldogs' advantage to 2-0 at the 21:16 mark with his first collegiate goal. Fellow freshman Mason Leonard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) earned the assist serving a ball in from the corner to Enna, who headed it past Green Bay goalkeeper Kyle Ihn.
Leonard capped the Bulldogs' scoring efforts in the 39th minute (38:24) heading a ball into the net off a corner kick by junior Alex Troester (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West). The goal was the first in Leonard's collegiate career.
Drake finished the half holding a 3-0 lead after registering a 7-5 first-half advantage in shots.
Green Bay stepped up its offensive attack in the second half as the Phoenix outshot the Bulldogs, 12-3, en route to posting a 17-10 margin in shots on the evening.
Tyler Swanner spoiled the shutout bid for Drake's defensive unit led by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic), converting a free kick at the 83:07 mark.
Troester sparked the Bulldogs with a team-high two shots, while eight different Drake players recorded one shot each. Jeremy Nji led all players with a game-high five shots for the Phoenix.
MacLeod finished the affair with a game-high five shots for the Bulldogs, while Ihn pulled in three saves for Green Bay.
